In-vitro studies of Bryophyllum pinnatum Crude Extract on Blood Coagulation Indices: An Investigation on its Traditional Medicine Use

Abstract:Background: Bryophyllum pinnatum extract is used by African natives to stop epistaxis [nose bleeding], postpartum bleeding as well fresh wounds bleeding. Aim: This study was carried out in order evaluate the coagulant effects and properties crude B. using in-vitro blood coagulation screening tests. Materials Methods: Healthy volunteers were for following tests performed: prothrombin time (PT), Partial Thromboplastin Time with Kaolin (PTTK), Thrombin (TT), Euglobulin Lysis (ELT), (BT) whole (WBCT). Blood samples collected from adult male female trained phlebotomist thumb venous puncture depending on type test. Results: produced a profound decreased PT, PTTK, TT ELT times which concentration dependent. Extract concentrations 84 mg/ml highly significant reductions (p< 0.05) PTTK 1.68 ± 0.16, 7.1 0.28, 1.06 0.19 sec respectively. Whole 84mg/ml but not significantly. Results also showed that significantly reduced extract. The effect plasma had property without addition activating agent platelet-poor plasma.
